Minecraft Server Management - The Basics

This article aims to teach the basics of running a Minecraft server on WitherHosting!

Getting Started:

Turning on your server:

To turn on your server, navigate to witherpanel, select your server and click the "Start" button as seen below:

On first run, the panel will show a message asking you if you agree to the Minecraft EULA, which is the requirements that you need to follow to run your Minecraft server, the panel provides a link, but the EULA can be found here. https://account.mojang.com/documents/minecraft_eula If you agree, click the blue agree button.

Your server should start up, if it gives an error, you can try using the reinstall button in the settings section on the left side panel. If this doesn't work, you can open a support ticket and we will gladly help!

How to join your server:

You can find the IP address and port at the Information box next to the server console.

How to find and install plugins for your minecraft server

There are different software for Minecraft servers, and each software has different plugins, and places to find them.

PocketMine-MP

To get PocketMine-MP plugins, you can visit the website - https://poggit.pmmp.io/plugins You can search for plugins by Author, search in categories, and in API versions. When you find a plugin you like, you can download the file for it.

| PocketMine-MP plugins have a .phar extension to the file you download.

Nukkit

To get Nukkit plugins, you can visit the website - https://cloudburstmc.org/resources/ You can search for plugins under the Nukkit category, and also find plugins based on Most popular, recently reviewed, and authors. When you find a plugin you like, you can download the file for it.

Bukkit

To get Bukkit plugins, you can visit the website - https://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins You can search for plugins and sort them by most popular, last updated, date created, etc. You can also search for plugins specific to a server version. You can even search for plugins based on their caetgory! When you find a plugin you like, you can download the file for it.

How to install and use GeyserMC

In this article, we will guide you how to install and use the GeyserMC plugin on your, a bridge between java and bedrock, allowing bedrock players to connect to java servers.

If you want to install Geyser for BungeeCord, you only need to install the plugin on the proxy server, following this similar guide then all the target servers will have geyser implemented.

Getting started

To begin, you can first download the plugin file from https://ci.opencollab.dev//job/GeyserMC/job/Geyser/job/master/

Download the plugin file for your respective server software! ( Note - download Geyser-spigot.jar if your server software is purpur/tuinity/paper/spigot/bukkit ). Once downloaded, upload your plugin to the plugins directory in your server files, using file manager in the WitherHosting dashboard, or by using sFTP. | Make sure your server is stopped while uploading the plugin! Now, start and stop your server, to generate the files required for geyser.

Configuration

Edit the config.yml file ( located in plugins --> geyser ) to have the following values -

Set the address as 0.0.0.0in the bedrock IP address ( line 13 ).
Set the port as your server port provided by WitherHosting in the port section ( line 15 ).

Accessing files using sFTP

In this article, you will learn how to access your server's SFTP. To get started, you need to install an SFTP client, such as FileZilla, or WinSCP. You can find respective direct download links for each here.

Open up FileZilla once it is finished downloading and it should look like this:

On the left side, it will display your files on your computer. The important fields we have to pay attention to are the top 4 fields.

Now, go to your panel dashboard in wither hosting, and go to your server. Then, click on the settings tab, to get to sFTP login details Then, copy/paste the connection address as shown below, excluding ":2022" and paste it to the host field.

How to Upload a Custom World to your Server

In this article, we learn how to upload custom worlds. We'll go over uploading a custom world per device type. It's recommended to get the software WinRAR so that you can zip your files so uploads can happen faster

Java Edition

To get your local worlds for Java edition, you need to first navigate to the directory where your files are stored.

Windows Press Win+R, type %appdata%\.minecraft\saves and press Ok.
MacOS Open Finder then paste: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft in the Search box.
Linux ~ is your home directory, usually /home/YOURNAME, so ~/.minecraft would be /home/YOURNAME/.minecraft/.

Bedrock Edition

To get your local worlds from bedrock edition, each device has a special directory to where you can find your files. Let's break it down

Windows Press Win+R, type %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds and press Ok.
Android & Amazon Fire OS Worlds present in /sdcard/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds . It may not be in your sd card in particular, just find the folder games
Apple iOS Apps/com.mojang.minecraftpe/Documents/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds . It may not be in the particular specified directory, just find the folder games

How to point your domain to your Minecraft Server

It may seem like a tough task, but pointing domains to Minecraft servers are far easier than you think! In this tutorial, we will go over the basics of pointing the domain, and how different domain providers have setup DNS management for domains you own.

General Idea

Here are the general steps, universal to all domain providers, for pointing your domain to your Minecraft Server!

Step 1 - Go to your domain's DNS settings

That is usually available in your domain provider's dashboard, or under your domain's information.

Step 2 - Add DNS records

To point your domain to your minecraft server, you need to add records to the DNS. Add the following records -

A type record

Host - This is what your domain's prefix will be - for example, if we put play in the host field, the ip your players will use is play.yourdomain.xyz
Target/Points to/Answers - This is the IP the domain in the Host field will point to - put your Minecraft server IP in this field.
TTL - This determines how long you want your query cached for, we will set it as 1/2 hour, but you are free to put any value.

|| If your server has a dedicated port ( 25565 ) you can stop here, and your domain should be pointed to your server.

Name - Your domain's prefix, which we have chosen in the "Host" field in A record.
